Hungarians text, not toast, at New Year’s
Could text messages be replacing the time-honoured tradition of toasting the New Year with a glass of sparkling wine? Fresh data from Hungary’s three telecommunications service providers might suggest so.
Text messages sent by subscribers of T-Mobile, Hungary’s biggest mobile services provider, exceeded 12m on New Year’s. Vodafone Magyarorszag subscribers sent almost 8m text and multimedia messages and Telenor Magyarorszag subscribers sent 10.8m
The population of Hungary is just under 10m.
The service providers said the number of messages sent fell from the previous holiday as more subscribers used social networking sites, sometimes with mobile internet, to send New Year’s greetings.
