Index.hu compiled information provided by the Opten company information database, which shows that while there were 3,077 Chinese-owned companies in Hungary in 2010, this had fallen to only 1,186 by 2016.
The 61% decrease has a number of likely causes, it observes. For one, immigration from China has slowed, while on the other hand many small-sized companies have gone bankrupt.
At the same time, the report acknowledges some positive trends. While in 2010, 11% of Chinese companies were under liquidation, last year this was only 2.5%.
Almost half of the companies, 45% of the total, are in the wholesale business, and 20% in retail, while 20% have industrial activities and 5% are in the hospitality business.
