‘Son of Saul’ wins Critics’ Choice award
The Hungarian film “Son of Saul” has won yet another award in the best foreign language category, this time at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards held yesterday in Los Angeles.“Son of Saul” is the feature debut of Hungarian director László Nemes and is also one of five films nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category on Thursday.

The film, which addresses the horrors of the Holocaust through the micro-narrative of Saul, a Jewish Sonderkommando at Auschwitz responsible for escorting his fellow prisoners into the gas chambers and then disposing of their bodies, also recently took home a Golden Globe for best foreign language film and was the winner of the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
A former assistant to renowned Hungarian director Béla Tarr, Nemes studied film in New York and wrote and directed three award-winning shorts including “With a Little Patience” and “The Counterpart” prior to writing and directing his latest award-winning film.
The Critics’ Choice Awards are held every year to celebrate cinematic achievements around the world and this year the event was combined with the Critic’s Choice Television Awards.
