Slovakian citizens account for almost 30% of the layoffs so far at Finnish handset maker Nokia's plant in the Hungarian city of Komárom, near the border with Slovakia, the head of the local labour office confirmed for MTI.

Szabolcs Pákozdi said Nokia had laid off 846 Hungarians and 348 Slovakian citizens so far.

Nokia said in February that it would make 2,300 layoffs at the base in Komárom (NW Hungary) by the end of 201.

About 4,400 people worked at the plant at the time.

Nokia said it expected to transfer device assembly from the plant in Komárom, as well as plants in Reynosa (Mexico) and Salo (Finland), to Asia, where most component suppliers are.
