Slovakia plans to tax subsidized renewable energy sources

EU

Slovakia is considering additional taxation of producers of electricity from renewable sources that gained the right to generous purchasing electricity prices in the past, the CTK news agency quoted Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico as saying. The boom of above all photovoltaic (PV) power plants in Slovakia – similar in the neighboring Czech Republic - contributed to a growth in electricity prices. “Support to electricity produced from renewable sources was so generous in the past that it is very interesting from the business point of view, but it also affects electricity prices,” Fico said. The state would use the income it would receive thanks to the possible higher tax on green electricity producers for pushing down the prices of electricity for consumers. According to the report, the Slovak government wants to wait with the introduction of the special tax for the steps that the European Union will take in this matter. Top representatives of EU member states are discussing on energy prices in Brussels.
