Ryanair faces HUF 50 mln fine from GVH

Competition

press release

Hungaryʼs Competition Office (GVH) today said it had fined Irish low-fare airline Ryanair HUF 50 million on charges of misleading advertising, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.

According to the competition office the airlines failed to adequately inform consumers during an advertisement campaign in 2012-2015 that they could opt out of the airlineʼs own foreign exchange service while falsely suggesting that they would be better off availing of the service than if they used their own banks, MTI said.

As an aggravating factor, GVH noted two earlier violations of fair trade practices in the past five years by Ryanair, MTI said adding that “significant changes” Ryanair made to comply with GVHʼs expectations were a mitigating factor.
