PM: Gov’t must resign if fails to secure support for tax, budget bills
Hungary’s minority Socialist (MSZP) government must resign if it fails to garner enough support for its tax and budget bills in Parliament, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said at an event for foreign journalists on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
“There are two very important acts, the budget and the tax. If these two very important regulations are not in the hand of the government it means the government must not stay in office,” Reuters quoted Gyurcsány as saying. Parliament is expected to vote on the government’s tax and budget bills in the second half of the year.
The Socialists split with junior coalition partner the Alliance of Free Democrats (SZDSZ) on April 30 because of disagreements over unpopular reforms. Gyurcsány said the Socialists are open to new talks with SZDSZ on re-joining the coalition. “If SZDSZ wanted new talks on the coalition we would welcome it, ours is an open door policy,” Dow Jones quoted Mr Gyurcsány as saying.
