Hungary maintains rejection of British EU budget proposal

Hungary will not change its position on the British proposal for the 2007-20013 European Union budget until it is amended, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány told his British counterpart Tony Blair at a meeting in Brussels, government spokeswoman Boglár László said on Friday. During their 15-minute meeting on Friday, Gyurcsány said he wanted to see more funds in the 2007-2013 EU budget for Hungary and more flexibility in the regulations on the use of funds, László said. Gyurcsány also demanded an increase in the range of several hundred million euros in funds for Hungary. When queried about the possible sources of extra funds, Gyurcsány told Blair that the EU budget needs to be higher than 1.03% of members' GDP as included in the British proposal, and the current system of British refunds needs to be changed.
