Gov't proposes labor restrictions for Romania, Bulgaria

Hungary's government proposed on Tuesday to only partially open up its labor market to job-seekers from Romania and Bulgaria.

The two countries will join the European Union on January 1. In the first two years of their membership the range of professions in which applicants will be given work permits automatically will be limited to about 130-140 types of job where labor is in short supply, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said at a meeting of the parliamentary parties. Opposition parties Fidesz and KDNP refused to attend the meeting. Attending the meeting were the leaders of the National Interest Coordination Council (OÉT) and Parliament's economic, employment and integration affairs committees.
