People Tend to Forget Healthy Eating, Exercise at Work

HR

Tens of millions of European workers are affected by diseases resulting from a lack of adequate exercise and a conscious diet, and Hungarians need to look after their health by increasing their physical activity according to research by Profession.hu.

A positive finding of the representative survey is that there are significantly more Hungarian workers who pay attention to good nutrition than those who don't (42% vs. 25%).

Around half of the respondents eat fruit and vegetables every day, and the same number drink an adequate amount of water.

Interestingly, while 52% of those who work from home make health-conscious food choices, the figure is only 37% for those who commute to work.

Regardless of location, the vast majority of workers tend to drink no more than three cups of coffee a day (70%) and many avoid energy drinks (72%).

Although Profession.hu's research shows that Hungarians are aware of the importance of exercise, few take the time to do it. Almost half of the respondents are very inactive, and less than a third of them do exercise specifically to improve their health.

A Eurostat report shows that in 2020, one in ten European workers reported some kind of work-related injury or illness, a significant proportion of which is the result of physical inactivity and poor posture.
The WHO recommends that an average of 150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both, is needed to maintain good health.

The national survey shows that on average Hungarians fall significantly short of this. Especially for the youngest generation, Generation Z, the activity levels are extremely low. Those who work from home do better on nutrition, and those who commute to work do better in terms of physical activity.

Research by Profession.hu shows that half of all workplaces now support their employees' health in some way. Most of them do so through SZÉP cards (39%), but preventive screening and health assessments (12%), health insurance (10%), and health insurance contributions (9%) have also appeared. Workers would most like their workplace to provide massage support (31%), fruit days (30%), and the introduction of ergonomic chairs (26%).
