Hungarian workforce inactive

The activity rate of potential employees between the age of 15 and 64 is only 57.6% in Hungary; significantly lower than the 63.4% average in the EU27, economy and market research company Ecostat reported.

One of the most important reasons for this difference is the very low level of part time employment in Hungary. In the EU15 countries 18.6% of the employees work part time; this ratio is only 4.4% in Hungary, the study says. Neither the employers nor the employees are interested in this form of work; the former because of the increased administrative burdens, the latter because of the lower salary. The number of employees varied between 3.875 million and 3.957 million in the last 3-4 years; it is 3.9 million currently. Unemployment rate was 7.3% between March and May; down from 7.8% at the beginning of the year. Still it is above the 6.6% average of the EU15 and the 7% of the EU27 countries. (Gazdasági Rádió)
