Hungarian oil and gas company MOL is looking to return to the retail market in Austria after pulling out last year, Austrian business paper WirtschaftsBlatt said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.

“If a network of gas stations of the appropriate scale and quality comes up for sale, we are ready to buy and to run them,” Ferenc Horváth, who oversees MOLʼs downstream business, reportedly told the paper.

“I canʼt say anything precise about this today, but I can confirm that we have not given up. It is not improbable that we will one day own a high-quality, nationwide network of petrol stations in Austria,” he added.

MOL pulled out of Austria because the market was saturated, Horváth said, according to WirtschaftsBlatt.

“The gas station network we ran in Austria didnʼt function well and was also too small,” he said.

MOL still has a big presence on the corporate refinery products market in Austria, generating annual sales of about HUF €900 million, Horváth told the paper.

MOL is a market leader in the retail fuel markets of Hungary, Croatia and Slovakia. It is among the top three players on retail fuel markets in Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia, according to MTI.
