Miskolc public transport workers on strike
Employees of the Miskolc City Transportation Company have gone on strike, saying the company failed to provide salary increases as promised last year and did not distribute premiums owed for the past several years, online daily origo.hu reported today.
Two-thirds of the cityʼs buses and trams continue to operate, but there will be much longer than expected waits, particularly in the outskirts of the city, and revised schedules have been posted at the city’s bus and tram stops, according to origo.hu.
The chairman of the strike committee, László Zelenka, reportedly said that the strike is receiving reasonable support and staff will continue to provide transport services to Miskolc residents as they are legally bound to do so.
Zelenka said that by placing non-striking employees on additional routes to cover the shortage, the transport company is in breach of the law, and trade union representatives are taking legal steps in this regard.
The strike began after the Administrative and Labor Court of Miskolc ruled in the first instance on Tuesday that it had refused the transport company’s request to deem the strike unlawful.
