The Hungarian subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz is planning to invest €1 billion to build a second plant next to its existing facility in Kecskemét, according to a press release issued today. Production in the new factory could be launched by the end of the decade, and it would create 2,500 new workplaces, the release said.

The new plant will increase production capacity of the firm, and should also allow the company to be able to react to market demands with more speed and flexibility, said Markus Schäfer of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

“The investment is proof that the Hungarian government made a good decision when it set off with an economic policy that aims to turn Hungary into the European center of activities with high added value,” Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said.

Mercedes started production in Kecskemét in 2012, and by February, the plant had turned out 500,000 cars.

Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary Kft. currently employs approximately 4,000 people in the country.
