Lufthansa Technik eyes new base at Debrecen airport
German aviation company Lufthansa Technik is planning to establish a base at Hungary’s Debrecen international airport, eastern Hungary, deputy CEO Sándor Szomora said yesterday, according to Hungarian news agency MTI.
The deputy CEO said that the company decided on the creation of the base at the airport following Hungarian low-cost airline WizzAir’s plans to make the airport its second base in Hungary soon.
Lufthansa Technik has operated an aircraft repair and maintenance base in Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport for fifteen years, serving WizzAir, Austrian, Norwegian and other foreign airlines in addition to the parent company Lufthansa. The company has a headcount of 350, MTI said.
Hungarian Wizz Air recently renewed its contract with Lufthansa Technik Maintenance International (LTMI) and Lufthansa Technik Budapest (LTB) for the maintenance work of its Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak-based fleet.
Lufthansa is scheduled to operate flights between Munich and Debrecen from next April.
LTB will also be in charge of the operations of Wizz Air’s recently opened maintenance hangar at Budapest’s Liszt Ferenc International Airport. As a result of the contract, the companies expect to employ 100 workers in the region.
