Invitel launches Digital Welfare package

Invitel yesterday became the latest to launch an internet service package tailored for people who are not yet online, under the government-initiated Digital Welfare Program, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.
The concept behind the Digital Welfare Program is to offer low-priced cable internet service packages to those who cannot afford the prices currently available. The new Invitel package is 20% cheaper than the providerʼs similar content subscription. Invitel is also providing an educational program for children and adults about the basics of using the internet.
The rate of internet use among the Hungarian population has risen to 78%, just 1 percentage point under the European Union average, said Tamás Deutsch, the Fidesz MEP who oversees the Digital Welfare Program. The government expects the rate to climb over 85% by 2019, he added.
Earlier this month, Magyar Telekom and Telenor also launched their own packages under the Digital Welfare Program.
