Internet book market passes Ft 1 bln mark in 2005

The combined revenue of the four largest Hungarian online bookstores was above Ft 1 billion last year, business daily Világgazdaság reported. Two of the four, Bookline and Alexandra doubled their revenues from online sales, and the former expects to increase its revenue by 150% this year to Ft 1.5 billion.

“The sudden explosion in sales is a result of increasing broadband penetration, as the number of internet users reached critical mass last year,” said István Dallos, IT director of Pécsi Direkt Kft, the company operating the Alexandra network.

Online bookstores typically offer prices 5%-10% lower than their physical counterparts, and users can compare prices much easier. There is a steady group of customers who are not afraid to order books online, György Márffy, president of Rt said.
