Wizz Air eyes Budapest-Sofia route
Hungary’s low-cost airline Wizz Air is planning to launch a direct flight between Budapest and Sofia as of November 1, flying three times a week, the company announced today, according to reports.
The number of planes based in Sofia is expected to be increased to six by March, while the number of planes based in Budapest will reach ten by the summer, the company said.
Two weeks earlier, Hungaryʼs National Development Ministry said it would soon call a tender to operate a direct flight between Budapest and Sofia and impose a “public service obligation” on the route, allowed under EU rules to “maintain appropriate scheduled air services on routes which are vital for the economic development of the region they serve”, Hungarian news agency MTI reported.
