SkyEurope October passenger numbers rise 50% on transit flights

SkyEurope Airlines, a Slovak low-cost carrier, said October passenger numbers rose 50% as it added more flights between southeastern and western Europe.

The airline handled 226,714 passengers in the month compared with 151,473 people in October 2005, SkyEurope Holding AG, the carrier's Vienna-based parent company, said in an e-mailed statement today. The carrier filled 76.1% of its seats, up 6.4%age points. The company, which raised €56.3 million ($71.4 million) in a stock sale in September, is expanding in southeastern European countries such as Romania and Bulgaria to tap the rising number of travelers as economic growth in the region is greater than in western Europe. SkyEurope has introduced transit flights from Sofia to Paris and Dublin via its base in Bratislava, Slovakia. The airline said it took delivery of a new Boeing Co. 737-model airliner at the end of October. (Bloomberg)
