Budapest Airport was preparing to hold its annual Christmas party again this year, but due to the new wave of the pandemic, the company decided to postpone it, for the safety of its employees. Part of the money spent on this purpose is thus being used for charity, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.

The airport operator has offered half of the money to the organization called United Way Hungary, who will use it to help children in need and living in difficult circumstances.

The company will spend the other half of the amount, originally earmarked for the end-of-year party, to purchase tablets for the Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric and Infant Wards of the largest children’s hospital, Heim Pál and the largest central hospital, the South Pest Central Hospital, where the tablets will provide entertainment, education and parental contact for the children cared for there.

Budapest Airport earns Institution Supporting Men’s and Women’s Health certification

In November this year, the company joined the international Movember campaign, to raise awareness of cancer prevention. The airport reorganized the campaign, which originally focused on men’s health, according to its own rules; it promoted women’s, men’s and children’s health at the same time.

As part of the campaign, Budapest Airport offered free health screenings to its employees. At several times and in more than one location, employees could undergo breast cancer or prostate cancer screenings. 322 of the employees took advantage of the health screening, thereby acting in line with charitable goals for their own health.

With this initiative, Budapest Airport has earned the certification of Institution Supporting Men’s and Women’s Health.

Airport workers grow mustache worth millions, for sick children

Also as part of the Movember campaign, the airport announced a mustache-growing initiative among its employees. For every BUD mustache grown in November, the company donated HUF 20,000 to the Hope for Children with Leukemia Foundation, supporting the recovery of children with leukemia and tumorous diseases.

Some 67 employees participated in the charity mustache-growing, raising a total of HUF 1,340,000 in the campaign, to help the treatment of sick children.

100 meals for the homeless to be distributed on Christmas Eve

This year, on December 24, Budapest Airport employees will join forces with volunteers from the Budapest Bike Mafia and the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta. The Budapest Bike Mafia originally helped homeless people living on the streets and in social care by delivering food donations by bicycle. Now, with their support and coordination, 100 meals will be delivered to the Train shelter of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta. The festive menu will include fish soup, sesame-seeded fried catfish fillet with vegetable rice, rolled meatloaf with parsley potatoes, and poppy seed and walnut Christmas rolls.

Officially known as the Frauenförderprogramm “Diversität und Digitalisierung,” the airport operator supports the university every year, where a special scholarship is provided for selected students and, thanks to the cooperation, they have the opportunity to participate in the life and the work processes of the airport, as interns.
