Tesco workers call strike for two days
Employees of retail chain Tesco went on strike on Friday beginning from 4 p.m., and will strike again Saturday from 10 a.m., one of the labor unions representing workers announced Friday. The union said it is still open to a settlement with management.
Zoltán Karsai, the leader of the Union of Commercial Employees (KASZ), announced that Tesco stores which participate in the strike will completely close between 4 p.m. and midnight Friday, and from 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday. The unions are asking for a wage increase of 25% and a headcount increase of 15%, according to online news portal index.hu.Â
Following the announcement, the management of Tesco issued a statement in which they expressed disappointment regarding the strike. Tesco will make every effort to keep the stores open, the statement said.
On Tuesday, the government expressed support for Tesco employees through a letter to unions from János Lázár, the head of the Prime Ministerʼs Office.
