Slovakia retail sales surge in April

Slovakia's retail sales increased 11.5% year-on-year in April, following a 0.3% rise in March, figures from the Slovak Statistical Office (SÚSR) showed on Friday.

Sales of culture and recreation goods increased 86.6% yearly in April. Sales of information, communication, technology, and other household equipment grew by 14.7% and 35.6%, respectively.

Meanwhile retail trades of other goods in specialized stores grew 25.1% and those of stores, stalls and market rose by 15.4%. On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 3.0% in April. On another report SÚSR said that Slovakia's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.2% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2021, below a preliminary estimate of a 0.3% expansion and following a 2.1% contraction in the previous quarter.

On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the economy shrank 2%, more than earlier estimates of a 1.8% drop. Separate data from the Bratislava-based statistical office showed that the jobless rate was 7.1% in the first quarter.
