Online Retail Sales in Hungary Climb 10% in 2022

Online retail sales in Hungary rose 10% to gross HUF 1.323 trillion last year, research by consultancy GKID and Mastercard show.

Online turnover accounted for 9.6% of total retail sales, down from 10.4% in 2021 as brick-and-mortar businesses gained ground.

GKID chief consultant Norbert Madar said more frequent online purchases drove growth: the number of online orders climbed 12% to 77.1 million, while the average order value edged down 2% to HUF 17,200.

Consumers placed 21 orders online, on average, up 13% from 2021. Residents of Budapest placed over 30 online orders on average. 

Around 5.1 million consumers in Hungary made purchases online last year. About 3.1 million bought goods and the rest purchased services.

The latest data show there are 32,000 webshops active in Hungary, 4% fewer than 12 months earlier. Around 65% of stores have annual revenue under HUF 100 mln and 13% have a yearly turnover above HUF 1 bln.
