Hungarian MEP denies spy accusations
Béla Kovács, who is a Hungarian Member of European Parliament representing the country’s far-right Jobbik party, denies the accusations of spying for Russia claiming his contact with Russian citizens has been innocuous.
Members of the Hungarian Parliament reported in May that they had found compelling evidence to prove that Kovács had been a spy favoring Russian interests. Top prosecutor of Hungary requested the suspension of Kovács’ immunity from prosecution.
Kovács, after being re-elected at May’s European Parliamentary elections, said that he would give up his immunity if it was up to him to do so. First, the EP parliamentary committee is required to vote on the issue, prior to discuss Kovács' immunity. The first steps are expected to be made in September.
Talking at a press conference on Monday, Kovács said that he “haven’t met any Russians in a conspirational way.” He added that meeting Russians “was natural” for him being a member of EP. He added that the people he met can be “commissioned for other jobs” that he has no knowledge of.
Jobbik spokesman Ádám Mirkóczki said that “the allegations and so-called evidence” can apply to any MEP. He also stated that the party is standing behind Kovács.
