Estonian Retail Sales Drop in December

Estonian retail trade fell by 6.5% year-on-year in December, the fourth straight month of fall in retail sales and the steepest decline in the current sequence, after a 2.3% drop in November, data released by Statistics Estonia (SE) showed on Monday.

The decrease in retail sales was influenced the most by the stores selling manufactured goods (-11%), mainly in stores selling via mail order or the internet (-27%).

The drop in turnover was above average also in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials (-16%) and in other specialized stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc. (-12%).

On a monthly basis, retail sales grew 7.3%, the most since March, following rising 3.6% in November. For the full year of 2022, the retail trade grew 2% from a year earlier.
