Dell expanding its retail strategy plans store in Russia, Hungary


Dell Inc. the second-biggest PC maker, plans to open its first store in Russia, part of a retail strategy designed to win back personal-computer shoppers from Hewlett-Packard Co.

The Moscow store will open early next month and sell computers, server computers and printers, Dell said Wednesday. Dell Inc. also set up an outlet in Budapest, Hungary, in April, making the Moscow store its second in Europe. The two Dell-owned stores are the first to sell directly to customers, spokesman David Frink said.

Dell abandoned its strategy of taking orders mainly over the phone and the Internet this year after trailing Hewlett-Packard in PC shipments for four straight quarters. The company has formed partnerships with retailers such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Russia has about 28 million Internet users, and sales of computer products could double there in the next four years, Dell CEO Michael Dell said in the statement. The company has sold its products in Russia for about 10 years through other retailers and wanted a site dedicated to its products, Frink said.
