Hungary may build €1 bln research center

Hungary may build one of Europe's biggest research centers with an investment of €1 billion, the online version of Népszabadság reported.

Hungary would pay 40%, while other European Union countries would cover the rest of the costs of the spallation neutron source in Debrecen, 200 kilometers east of Budapest, which could be built by 2015 at the earliest, Népszabadság said citing Rezső Lovas, the director of the local Nucleus Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
While the local government has signed a letter of intent to host the center, it's still unknown when Hungary's government will decide whether to subsidize it, Népszabadság said citing Gergely Ábrahám, spokesman for the Economy Ministry.
The spallation neutron source is an accelerator-based neutron source. The Hungarian facility would be the third in the world after a center completed in May in the U.S. and another currently being built in Japan.
