Greenpeace leads protest of bio-farm nationalization
A recent decision by the National Land Fund Management Organization (NFA) to privatize an organic farm in Kishantos drew protest activity yesterday, with Greenpeace Hungary and other NGOs drumming up over 100 to demonstrate against the selling of what activists have called “a national asset and Hungarian specialty.”
Kishantos Rural Development Center managing director Mrs. Sándor Ács has deemed the new lease contracts “illegitimate” and has promised to use legal measures to ensure single operation of the 452-hectare plot; the Center has refused to turn over operations to the NFA in defiance of an October 1 deadline. Ács also informed that a complaint has been filed with Rural Development Minister Sándor Fazekas on the matter.
At a press conference related to the demonstration, Greenpeace Hungary regional campaign director Katalin Rodics claimed that 150 organizations and 5,600 individuals supported the farm’s current ownership and management.
In October, Greenpeace Hungary garnered some attention for the would-be breakup of the farm with creation of a 500 x 150 crop circle-like “sign” (see accompanying image) as part of the organization's “Save Kishantos” campaign.
