GE opens European lighting showroom in Budapest
General Electric (GE) opened its European lighting showroom, completed through investment of HUF 200m, in Budapest on Thursday.
National development Minister Tamas Fellegi said the company has thereby strengthened its presence in Hungary, and "we also confirm our commitment to continue to strive for long-term strategic cooperation with GE". He noted that GE employs 6,000 workers at its six units in Hungary.
GE's regional president and CEO Phil Marshall noted that Egyesült Izzó, which later changed its name to Tungsram, began operating 115 years ago, and GE purchased the shares of Tungsram in 1989.
He said the centre for GE's European operations is based here, and the global technology development centre, which employs more than 200 Hungarian engineers, plays a leading role in technological development.
Hungary is where the production centers for energy-efficient halogen lamps and ceramic metal-halide lamps are, he added. GE employs 2,200 people in Budapest alone.
Global technology manager Zoltán Vámos told MTI that GE has launched 120 new product lines so far this year, from LED transport lamps through new refrigerator lighting to new outdoor lamps.
