Hungary topped out a more than HUF 300 billion munitions manufacturing complex in Várpalota on Friday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said the complex would be of "great importance" not just for Hungary but for all of Europe. The complex will create 1,000-1,200 jobs, he added.

European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton said there would be "strong demand" for the munitions produced at the facility as member states replenished their inventories.

He acknowledged that Hungary's spending on defense now exceeded 2% of GDP.
