Manufacturing

German carmaker BMW Group on Friday said it is building a high-voltage battery assembly plant at a vehicle production base under construction in Debrecen (195 km east of the capital), doubling investment value there to more than EUR 2 billion, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

BMW laid the cornerstone of the vehicle manufacturing plant at the base in Debrecen in the summer. Production of the car maker's fully electric Neue Klasse is set to start there in 2025.

The batteries assembled at the base will go into Neue Klasse models.

BMW Group said the battery assembly plant will create more than 500 additional jobs and bring total investment value at the base over EUR 2 bln.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said the government will contribute HUF 13.5 bln of support for the 140,000 sqm battery assembly plant.
