The state has transferred ownership of Grand Tokaj, the Tokaj wine-growing region's biggest vintner, to a foundation that runs the University of Tokaj-Hegyalja, a newly established school that offers degrees in wine-making as well as tourism and catering, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

István Stumpf, who heads the university's foundation, told journalists on Thursday that the school would establish the Tokaj Wine Business Institute for post-graduate studies in the future.

Grand Tokaj CEO Gergely Goreczky said the change in ownership marks "the beginning of a new era" for the company which turns out close to 5m bottles of wine a year and exports its products to 38 countries.

Grand Tokaj's revenue was close to HUF 2.7 bln in 2020, public records show.
