Transport volume falls 3.2% in H1

Hungary's transport companies carried 131.796 million tons of goods in the first half of 2006, 3.2% less than in the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) said on Wednesday.

Performance in terms of freight-ton-kilometers, however, increased 9.3% to 21.012 billion during the period. Freight carried abroad accounted for 38.396 million tons or 29% of the total volume in the first half, up 6.5% from the same period a year earlier. Of freight carried abroad, 51% went by rail, 22% by pipeline, 18% by road, 0.1% by waterway and the rest by other means.
In freight-ton-kilometers, international performance rose 13.4% year-on-year to 14.826 billion. Freight carried domestically fell 6.7% from a year earlier to 93.402 million tons in H1 2006.
