Hungary's Rural Development Ministry is cutting this year's national top-up for sugar beet farmers by HUF 800m because of spending freezes, agriculture state secretary György Czerván at a press conference on Wednesday.

The HUF 1.98bn originally allocated for the top-up is being cut by HUF 800m this year because of spending freezes to maintain the fiscal balance, Czerván said. The amount has already been paid out by sugar refinery Magyar Cukor to keep production going, he added.

The top-up for next year will be raised by HUF 800m to HUF 2.78bn, Czerván said.
