MÁV to try out Bombardier double-decker train

Hungary's national railway company MÁV Zrt and Canada's Bombardier Transportation are offering train lovers a special treat: starting Friday, MÁV will put into service one of Bombardier's double-decker trains for three weeks.

MÁV asked several makers of rolling stock if it could try out their double-decker trains, and Bombardier agreed, head of MÁV's passenger division Miklós Devecz said. The train, which consists of two passenger cars and a locomotive, traveled here from Germany.
Bombardier's sales director for Europe Jens Henke said the double-decker trains are operated in Germany, Israel and Denmark. In Germany alone, 1,400 of the double-decker trains are in operation. The passenger cars cost about €1 million apiece, depending on how they are outfitted.
MÁV signed a contract with Bombardier in March 2006 to purchase ten of its Talent-model suburban rail vehicles for €44 million. The trains are to be delivered by year-end.
