Fidesz calls for state auditors to examine gov't quarter project
Main opposition party Fidesz has called on the State Audit Office to examine the government's plans to build a new administrative quarter in Budapest, a party spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Fidesz will submit a proposal in parliament next week for an inquiry aimed at revealing whether the project is indeed necessary and what burdens it will pose to the budget, András Cser-Palkovics said. There is nothing to prove at the moment that moving the government offices to a new quarter is economically or financially justified, he added.
The government has selected an area near central Nyugati (Western) railway station for the site of its planned new administrative quarter. It has said it will sell its expensive downtown office buildings covering 350,000 square meters and relocate to a purpose-built 160,000 square meter complex as part of a set of cost-saving measures.
