Debrecen local council to refund HUF 500 mln in EU support
The Debrecen (E Hungary) local council will repay HUF 500 million in funding to the European Union that it and four nearby villages received for a HUF 22 billion waste-water treatment investment begun in 2003 after the EU discovered irregularities in the execution of the project, the daily Népszabadság reported on Monday.
The newspaper said that the EU requested that funding spent on sewerage in the village of Hajdúsámson be repaid because part of the works in the village was not included in the original application for the Instrument for Structural Policies for Pre-Accession (ISPA) support. Also, Debrecen, in charge of the project, has not invited a public procurement tender for sewerage work carried out on that part.
The city of Debrecen and nearby villages of Hajdúsámson, Ebes, Mikapercs and Sarand received 58% of the cost of the investment from the European Union, 32% from Hungary's government and paid for the reaming 10% of the project from their own resources, the newspaper noted.
Debrecen will repay the funding by the end of March.
