Business Model You –a workshop with Tim Clark on September 20

As part of his European tour, OD Partner invited Dr. Tim Clark to Budapest to give a workshop on his concept – Business Model You. On this occasion we interviewed him about his approach and about the workshop.

The Business Model You concept starts with identifying the Customer and the job that needs to be done – how specific should one get with each of these; especially the job that needs to be done?

Very specific! Let me give you an example: When I was a university professor, it was easy to define my Customers and students. But Jobs-to-be-done is more complicated. Is the professor’s job to award degrees? Help students graduate? Help them learn certain skills?

What I discovered was that most graduate business students are seeking to accomplish a common job: to change their careers. They want to move up or out of their organizations, or start their own companies. Therefore the Job-to-be-done is to help them change their careers. Changing and improving careers is what the Business Model You® methodology is all about.

Any change is often accompanied by fear; especially career change - what has your work taught you about managing this emotion?

Fear is a natural reaction to truly dangerous situations. It keeps us from falling off cliffs or stepping on snakes. The problem is that today, fear extends to looking silly because you don’t know the answer to something, or exposing your ideas to potential ridicule. Recognize first that there are very few situations in life where you truly risk career survival.

Action cures fear and indecision. If you can conceive of an action or a career test that’s a natural extension of your interests, personality, or skills/abilities/knowledge (not some fantastic leap!) odds are very good that you can do it.

Tell me the most important question that aspiring entrepreneurs should be asking themselves.

There are actually two: 1. What do I personally want to get out of this? and 2. How is my getting what I want going to help a larger community of people get what they want?

What do you know now that you didn't know before engaging in this project?

I know that people are exhausted by taking one job after another, and by treating their careers as a series of transactions rather than as a network of relationships. I know that people want to take a strategic rather than a tactical approach to career management. And I know that people all over the world are looking for a fresh, modern conceptual framework for thinking about work, and that they’re seeking inspiration and purpose in their lives. I only knew this intellectually before I started. Now I understand it in my bones.

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.
Newspaper organizations across the globe have struggled to find a business model that allows them to continue to excel, without compromising their ability to perform. Most recently, some have experimented with the idea of involving their most important stakeholders, their readers.
We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
