B Braun Medical Kft, the Hungarian unit of German medical and pharmaceutical company B. Braun Melsungen AG, on Saturday laid the cornerstone for a HUF 4bn expansion of its plant in northern Hungary.

The investment, which is expected to be completed in 2013, will entail construction of a 2,900-square-meter production hall and a 2,200-square-meter logistics warehouse.

B Braun Medical Kft received HUF 708m in support for the investment through the New Hungary Development Plan.

The unit expects to double production capacity and increase the number of workers it employs to 750 from the current 650 as a result of the investment.

B Braun Medical manufactures single-use medical supplies and operates a medical-technology distribution division as well as 18 dialysis centers. The company has made investments of HUF 55bn in Hungary over the past 20 years.

B Braun Melsungen operates two units in Hungary: B Braun Medical Kft and B Braun Avitum Zrt. The latter unit employs 850 workers. The two units generated combined revenue of HUF 25bn in 2010.
