Axel Springer may bid for Polish news channel – paper
German media group Axel Springer may compete with Polish publisher Agora to buy 33% of a small local news channel, Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported on Thursday, without giving sources.
The local media had reported that Agora, which is seeking to cut reliance on its flagship daily Gazeta Wyborcza for the bulk of its revenue, examined the books of Superstacja and is interested in eventually taking over the TV station.
The stake in Superstacja is valued at around 30 million zlotys ($14.6 million) and has been put for sale jointly by the station’s chief executive and a company linked to a closely held broadcaster Polsat, Rzeczpospolita said.
Axel Springer, which failed in its bid to secure a minority stake in Polsat last year, publishes Poland’s best-selling tabloid daily Fakt as well as local broadsheet Dziennik and Polish version of Newsweek. The spokesman for the German publisher’s Polish arm was unavailable for comment. (Reuters)
