The BMW that ushers in a no-compromise e-driving experience

Automotive

Short range, hours of charging, no driving experience, and not even sustainable – these are common criticisms of the irresistibly spreading electric cars. The BMW i4 disproves all these claims.

Let’s start with the most important aspect, range. BMW's first all-electric Gran Coupé hit the roads in two model versions at the end of 2021: the BMW i4 eDrive40 and the BMW i4 M50 offer a range of up to 590 km and 510 km respectively. This means that in addition to driving around town, commuting daily, or taking a country trip, an electric car driver doesn’t need to be afraid of a motorway journey either.

Even when it’s time for a charge. The BMW i4 eDrive40 can draw enough power for up to 164 km during a ten-minute coffee break and, with its maximum charging power of 200 kW, it will take just over half an hour to charge its battery from 10% to 80%, the ideal level for an electric car. These impressive figures can be achieved through flash chargers mostly installed along motorways, but one of the greatest benefits of electric vehicles is that they can be charged in a variety of places even while the driver is doing something else. Shopping, having lunch, negotiating, working, or sleeping. The BMW Wallbox, for example, which can be installed in homes, workplaces, or garages, allows you to fully charge your BMW i4 overnight.

That certainly would not be enough to convince BMW fans who seek true driving pleasure in each Bavarian model. This was also taken into consideration by the engineers since the above-mentioned BMW i4 M50 is the first all-electric model of the BMW M division whose dynamism is driven by electric motors on the front and rear axles. Together, they offer a maximum system output of 400 kW / 544 hp with a peak torque of 795 Nm. As a result, acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h is possible in just 3.9 seconds.

Anyone who might think that sporty performance needs to be sacrificed for the sake of a higher range would be mistaken. With 430 Nm of instant torque and 340 hp, the eDrive40 version will easily overtake in the inside lane. Just think, sports cars would have been envious of these figures a few years ago.

Horsepower is certainly not enough for true driving pleasure. The BMW i4 offers 40 driver assistance features, a lot of innovation, and premium atmosphere. When you get inside, you will be welcomed by a more streamlined and advanced version of the familiar BMW interior. It was the all-electric Gran Coupé where the new generation of BMW iDrive display and operating system, featuring the touch-sensitive BMW Curved Display, made their world debut. The curved display is a stylish and forward-looking ornament of the passenger compartment, grouping the 12.3-inch information display and the 14.9-inch control display.

Values measured according to the WLTP test cycle.
