Minister: Hungary produced 2.5 mln engines that are part of VW scandal
Audi Hungária’s plant in Győr turned out approximately 2-2.5 million diesel engines of the 11 million that are involved in Volkswagen’s emission scandals, National Economy Minister Mihály Varga said this morning on state-owned Kossuth radio. The scandal involved Volkswagen installing software in diesel cars to help cheat on emissions tests.
The minister said he believes that even if the scandal causes a drop in production, the Hungarian plant will be less affected by repercussions because the facility is “one of the Volkswagen Group’s most modern plants.”
He said it is “unclear” how vehicle sales will be affected by the scandal, however, he believes that diesel engines will continue to be used around the world “as they are more effective than gas engines.”
The minister added that the Hungarian government is planning to decrease the dependence of the country’s economy on the performance of the automotive sector, as such it is helping with the expansion of other sectors such as medicine, medical equipment and the manufacture of industrial parts.
The minister said that the automotive sector is responsible for 13% of Hungary’s export, and comprises 22% of the countryʼs industrial manufacturing, giving it "serious weight in the national economy.”
