GVH closes procedure against Google

Competition

The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) said on Friday it has closed a procedure against Google, which was sparked by data collection concerns.

The GVH closed the procedure after Google made commitments to inform users how its Allo instant messaging mobile app processes data "in plain language and in a balanced manner."

In addition, Google must also post an informative banner on its YouTube channel for one day in the fourth quarter of 2018 highlighting that it collects and handles consumers’ personal data and recommending that consumers review privacy policies and settings.

"The rights of consumers to make undistorted business decisions may be violated even if data protection rights are properly observed, if consumers are not supplied with information that would be necessary to make well-established decisions (or not supplied timely with correct information, or supplied timely with misleading information, or the information is not clear enough)," said the GVH in explaining its decision.

SUPPORT THE BUDAPEST BUSINESS JOURNAL

Producing journalism that is worthy of the name is a costly business. For 27 years, the publishers, editors and reporters of the Budapest Business Journal have striven to bring you business news that works, information that you can trust, that is factual, accurate and presented without fear or favor.
Newspaper organizations across the globe have struggled to find a business model that allows them to continue to excel, without compromising their ability to perform. Most recently, some have experimented with the idea of involving their most important stakeholders, their readers.
We would like to offer that same opportunity to our readers. We would like to invite you to help us deliver the quality business journalism you require. Hit our Support the BBJ button and you can choose the how much and how often you send us your contributions.
