EC to investigate state aid given to Audi
The European Commission is investigating a grant, from the Hungarian government to the German carmaker Audi, of €133.3 mln in state aid to help pay for an investment for expansion in the carmaker’s plant in Győr, the commission announced on its website today.
While aid to support major employers in economically depressed areas is allowed under EC rules, the size of the company receiving the support and the potential impact of the investment have stirred questions.
"The cost of the project amounts to €1.2 billion," the EC reported. "It is expected to create 2,100 jobs. Hungary plans to grant aid of €133.3 million. Given the size of the project and the market share of the Volkswagen Group – the owner of AUDI - the Commission needs to verify the impact of the project on regional development and whether the aid is necessary to carry out the investment in Győr."
