Data feared stolen in hacking of secret service spyware
The Hungarian secret service was forced to stop using their Hacking Team spy software, which they had employed to monitor conversations on smartphones and to obtain sensitive data, after service provider Hacking Team reported being hacked, Hungarian online daily Népszabadság reported this morning.
“We have lost one of our essential abilities,” the paper’s secret service source, who asked to remain anonymous, reportedly told the daily. Népszabadság said that almost 400 gigabytes of data had been retrieved from the servers of Hacking Team by hackers, who could have possibly acquired documents, personal data and source code.
According to euronews.com, the hacking team may have obtained confidential information that could be sensitive for Hungary, along with several other countries. Népszabadság believes that the stolen data could mean serious national security risks for the country.
The hackers had enough of a sense of irony to rename the Hacking Team’s twitter page “Hacked Team”. Hacking Team is an Italian company that specializes in creating surveillance software used by governments to tap into phones and computers, euronews.com said.
