Consortium signs e-toll contract

History

Hungarian owned consortium of i-Cell and ARH signed a contract with the State Motorway Management Company to ship an electronic road toll system for the public road network of the country, the National Development Ministry confirmed to MTI on Wednesday. The consortium should install the system by the July 1st deadline, the ministry said. Earlier, a tender to build the e-toll system failed in January as the winner, Dutch information and communications technology company Getronics, withdrew citing pressure from a competitor. The government has since mandated a new timeframe to ensure the deadline for the toll's introduction – July 1st, 2013 – is met. The government issued a decree in March declaring the e-toll system a matter of “national security,” thus exempting the project from public procurement rules. The central budget penciled in HUF 75 billion in revenue from the system in the second half of this year.
