Budapest Airport to lay off 80 people

Budapest Airport Rt plans to lay off 80 employees, mainly from the current management and administrative staff, the company's managing director Chris Woodruff said on Thursday.

The management of Budapest Airport, which operates Budapest’s Ferihegy international airport, told trade unions and employees that rationalization and lay-offs were deemed necessary in order to make the company's operation viable, more efficient and competitive, Woodruff said. The management informed workers' interest representation bodies about the details of its planned lay-offs on Wednesday.
The company has already accepted the resignation of an additional 190 people, Woodruff said. He added that Budapest Airport, in agreement with the trade unions, launched a program for early retirement and resignation in March. However, the number of employees is still too high and needs to be reduced further, he said.
Britain's BAA, which bought Budapest Airport last December, agreed with the Hungarian government that no more than 478 people, or 18.6% of the 2,570 staff, would be dismissed by the end of 2008.
