Germany-based vehicle manufacturer Opel led Hungary’s new passenger car market last year for the third year in a row, selling 6,120 vehicles, said Opel Magyarország managing director Gábor Köncz. Car sales were up 210 from 2012 at 6,120, excluding a 1,250-vehicle procurement by the National Police Headquarters.

Opel’s share of the passenger car market was 10.9% last year, Köncz said. Including light commercial vehicles, its market share was about 10%, with sales of 6,726 vehicles. Köncz said that the proportion of business generated by fleet sales, over 70% at present, was expected to remain unchanged.

Tamás Solt, director of the Szentgotthárd engine plant, said the base added two new families of large engines to the product palette last year, and serial production of smaller petrol engines would start in the middle of this year.

Opel’s new engine plant at the base will make 20 new variants of 1.6-liter diesel and petrol engines as of this year.

Meanwhile, another German giant likewise enjoyed year 2013: Engine output at Germany-based vehicle manufacturer carmaker Audi’s plant in Hungary rose by about 10,000 to 1,925,636 last year, according to statistics released by Audi Hungária Motor reported yesterday.

The Győr facility saw some 42,851 vehicles come off the assembly line last year, a 28% increase year-on-year. Employment at Audi was also up, with rolls reaching 10,337 as of December 31, a 19% jump y.o.y.

Audi Hungária Motor made 235 variants of six types of petrol engines and four types of diesel engines in 2013; about 5,400 workers at the engine plant turned out 8,100 units a day in 2013.
