Swine fever outbreak hits Hungarian meat exports

Serbia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea have placed a temporary ban on pork and pork products from Hungary because of the discovery of African swine fever (ASF) in a wild boar in the north of the country, business daily Világgazdaság reported today.

Serbia also imposed a ban on live hogs, Világgazdaság reported, citing the website of national food safety agency Nébih. South Korea and Taiwan have communicated the measures informally to the Hungarian authorities.

Although ASF has been discovered in just one wild boar in Heves county (in northern Hungary), the bans involved cover all exports from Hungary.

The Asia bans will have a significant impact on Hungarian meat production. Japan has become the main market for Hungarian meat, with one-quarter of revenues being generated there, amounting to EUR 76.2 million. Taiwan and South Korea are sixth on the Hungarian top meat export rankings, Világgazdaság noted.
