The Hungarian subsidiary of global discount supermarket chain Aldi has been paying more for milk to local producers while maintaining the price of products for its customers in most cases, the Germany-based chain announced in a press statement yesterday.

Aldi, which claims to be committed to the needs of its suppliers, has been paying an elevated price for a total of 18 milk and dairy products to Hungarian farmers in order to support the local dairy market, which has encountered difficulties lately. The prices at which these products are offered to consumers have not been raised in 16 cases, Aldi added.

“We find it important that we support Hungarian milk and dairy producers and processors, in cooperation with the Hungarian Dairy Products Council and the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture,” said Tibor Székács, CEO of Aldi Hungary.

The Aldi announcement follows a decision earlier this week by the local subsidiary of retail competitor Lidl to pay at least HUF 10 per liter more for milk to dairy farmers.

Following numerous protests at the beginning of the year by dairy farmers voicing their discontent about the low purchase price of milk and cheap milk imports, the Hungarian government decided in May to lower the VAT rate on raw milk from the current 27% to 5% from next year.
